Eighty-one years ago an attack on the U.S. navy base at Pearl Harbor left Americans stunned in the very place they stood. December 7, 1941, will always be remembered as the day America put its fist up to fight back. America was observing conflicts between Japan and Germany, observing was our only intention. This observation was interrupted abruptly around seven on a calm Sunday morning. It is important to realize that Sunday is one of the quietest days for a military base, while the sailors who are on the base are usually on active duty, many of them are religious. For the religious sailors, specifically, who follow the Christian faith, Sunday is their day of worship and rest. However, when a massive blow pushed them out of bed on their day of rest quickly turned to remember a disaster plan. Two-thousand, four-hundred, and three people died that day including sixty-eight civilians, and nineteen destroyed or damaged U.S. Navy ships, including eight battleships. This was Japan’s attempt to weaken the U.S. military forces, but all it did was invoke anger and a need for avenge for the ones who lost their lives due to a surprise and cowardly attack. The initial decision to enter the war was debated for a moment. U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt asked Congress for and received a declaration of war against Japan, the U.S. entered hot and heavy. This is why on December seventh America recognizes a national day of remembrance. The day America was hit in the heart and the day patriotism swept across the country. While the U.S. is said to be many things, it is built on a strong foundation. This foundation includes America’s preamble and the reason when our soil is targeted the country comes together as “We the People of the United States”. This belief keeps a strong country and continual insurance that if another country thinks they can hurt the U.S. there will be a consequence conducted by the very people who were targeted. These people have grit and determination, these people are a part of the six branches of the military that protect freedom; these people are Americans.
