The California Air Resources Board has voted to approve the ban on sales of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035, within their quotas, a certain percentage of zero-emission vehicles will be sold, increasing each year. Therefore, 35% of vehicles will be emission-free by 2026; then, in 2028, nearly 51% of vehicles would be emission-free; next, 68% in 2030; and finally, 100% of vehicles in 2035, and it is said that the rules will go into effect in 2026. With these new rules, used gas vehicles will not be affected and will be able to remain on the roads. The sale of used gas-powered vehicles on the market will also be allowed. Automakers who fail to meet the requirements will be fined.
At least 15 other states, such as Virginia, Massachusetts, Washington, Oregon, and New York have also taken steps to follow California. The states along with California make up a third of the United States automobile market. With this taking place in many states, companies such as General Motors and Dodge have made plans to contribute to the change. For example, Dodge has announced that their new muscle cars including the Challenger and Charger will no longer be gas-powered. General Motors is also planning to build a large network of fast charging stations throughout the country. In GM’s partnership with EVgo, they will be contributing 3,250 charging stations by 2025.
