On Monday, November 7, 2022, before 4 a.m Glynn County firefighters responded to the Symrise plant in Brunswick Georgia. Authorities reported a “small explosion” at the factory as they arrived, followed by two more explosions, forcing them to pull back temporarily. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control later in the morning, though crews continued to battle flare-ups close to 12 hours after the fire started. As a precaution, local emergency officials ordered neighborhoods within a 1-mile radius of the plant to evacuate. People within a 3-mile radius were told to shelter in place, along with students and staff at two area schools. Those evacuated from the plant and nearby homes were placed in a temporary shelter in Brunswick until it was safe for them to return. Eric Prosswimmer, an individual on the scene, said one firefighter suffering from exhaustion had been taken to a hospital and was in stable condition. There were no other injuries. Symrise specializes in fragrance, flavor, nutritional and cosmetic ingredients. Glynn fire officials said the source of the fire was hydrogen peroxide pinene, manufactured at Symrise. The company said employees and residents are not in danger, but the incident will continue to be investigated.
