Color Guard

Marisa Brown

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The color guard is a performing arts organization that marches alongside the marching band during football games and other events in the school. This school year, Powell High School has a color guard that consists of about 16 girls and a captain. This year the captain is Jenna Schafer, a senior. Hailey Whitehouse, a junior, says color guard is an enjoyable experience, but a lot of energy goes into it because it doesn’t come easy. The color guard has many different skills, including; people who spin flags, flags, and rifles. At the highest level, they spin flags, rifles, and sabers. Those who spin flags do basic flag tosses, different dances, and specified skills with the flag. A rifle toss can go from singles to quads and this year saber spins range from basic to medium difficulty. Football season is not the only time this group works. After football season is over, they do winter guard. During winter guard, the team decides their show theme and will do performances that last about three minutes. Jenna says, “It’s more technical, it’s more based on just guard instead of marching band where we’re just the color.” Color guard has its benefits, including a physical education credit and scholarships. The colleges that give the most scholarships for color guard are Columbia, Yale, Williams College, and Amherst College. Color Guard is difficult, but the work put into it comes with an exceptional reward.
