As many may know, Netflix is the largest streaming service by number of subscribers. This means that when a show gets released, their goal for a large number of views is quickly met. Recently the TV series “Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story”, was put on Netflix. The show stars Evan Peters as Dahmer and is directed by Ryan Murphy. Murphy is known as a genius director by many critics, however, with his hit series “American Horror Story” he developed a shock factor with viewers that is too gruesome for most. This element of horror was not left out in his new series and it is causing major noise in the film industry. Jeffery Dahmer's father, Lionel is especially angered because he was not notified before the release of the series. Lionel stated the show, “Unnecessarily glamorizes my son’s murders.” Through the years family members of victims have had to go through many hardships to heal from the grief of a close loved one being gruesomely murdered. Those same families and friends of Dahmer’s victims thought the crimes of the monster would be put to rest over twenty-eight years ago when he was killed in prison. However, it was just the beginning.
Six films have now been released regarding Dahmer’s story and with the most recent one, most of them felt it was the final straw and they are done reliving the trauma. This is why Lionel Dahmer is threatening to sue Netflix for not asking for permission before the series was already out and trending on every social media app. This thought to press charges has also been reinforced by others close to the murders, such as Rita Isbell. The issue is not the films themselves, but it is the fact former victims’ trauma was not regarded by the producers and they now have to go through another cycle of trauma due to the obsession of a director wanting his ideas to be “out there.”
