Since Covid, most, if not all, school work has been assigned via canvas or online. I decided to create a survey to see whether students prefer online work or paper. I had 84 responses. Over half of students would rather use paper for the majority of their assignments than doing it all on Chromebook.
My survey consisted of 4 questions.
Do you like doing your school assignments on paper or the Chromebook?
Would you rather take tests on paper or the Chromebook?
How do you prefer to take notes in class?
Overall would you rather use paper and pencil or the school-issued Chromebooks?
Question 1 had a result that more students like doing assignments on paper rather than on Chromebooks. In other studies, it has been proven that students are more incentivized to do the homework when it is on paper rather than when it is online.
Respondents to Question 2 stated they prefer tests on a Chromebook. Most likely because secretly it is easier to cheat. “In Massachusetts … when everyone was taking tests on paper, these districts scored consistently higher year after year. Then once those districts switched to online testing, their achievement fell and it was closer to what the lower-performing districts were experiencing.” If you were to take a test on paper you can always go back and review any question whereas an online test does not always allow you to go back. Also in Math, paper testing can have a more effective means of showing the work.
Paper notes was the predominant response to Question 3. It has been proven that taking notes on paper allows it to be easier for the students to remember the information. Also, it can be much cheaper by spending a few dollars on a couple of notebooks and a pack of pencils rather than $400 or more on a computer or Chromebook. One more pro of taking notes on paper is that it can be personalized which can make students more willing to study since it makes them appealing to their eyes.
The last question, Question 4, had a result showing that overall most students would rather go back to having everything on paper. The use of paper for schools over technology gives students the ability to learn with sensory contact and engagement with the paper. Paperwork and assignments can also improve reading comprehension for students. Lastly, it has been proven to help students progress at their own pace, be free of distractions, and ultimately improve their understanding of a subject.
