When you think of the characterizing parts of a person, eye color is one of the most thought of traits. But did you know that most babies’ eye colors change in their first years? Several studies have shown that most babies’ eye color changes in the span of their first two years, but some people’s eye color changes from teen to adult. The most common eye color in adults and babies is brown, which is most of the population. Blue, green, amber, and hazel are more of the rarer ones. People’s eye color can also change when they get hit in the face or are sick with an infection, or with other things. One of the most famous examples is David Bowie. His left eye’s pupil got permanently dilated when he got hit in the head when he was younger. This made his eyes famously asymmetrical. Most babies' eyes get darker when they age, but some get lighter. A baby could have blue eyes when they are born, and then when they turn two their eyes can be dark brown. For the most part, the main color in your eyes is determined by a pigment called melanin, and if you do have not much melanin in your eye, then you might have blue eyes, but more melanin gives more protection from the sunlight. The reason more kids have more melanin than others is a mystery.
