Grading Scale

Emma Wilkinson

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The Knox County Board of Education voted on changing the grading scale during a meeting in July. The system changed from a seven-point scale to a ten-point scale, effective for middle and high school students. This means any grade between ninety and one hundred percent is an ¨A¨, any grade between eighty and eighty-nine percent is a ¨B¨, and so forth. Consequently, making it more difficult for students to fail with the failing grade now being fifty-nine and below versus the sixty-nine and below it was before. The grading scale was changed to make it more equal for students. This helps set students up for success because this mimics the college grading scale letting students become familiar with it early on. Education experts have found that the zero to one-hundred grading scale is mathematically designated toward failure, while the ten-point scale can make a major difference in students’ GPA and help them to get into top colleges. Although, students favor the new grading system many wish it had been implemented earlier on. A section from Knox News states, ¨The grading scale won't be applied retroactively, so grades from the year before will stay the same.”Students stated they would have better grades and higher GPAs had this been effective on prior grades or been emplaced sooner. The system could make it equal for all students by changing everyone’s grade to abide by the new grading scale, that difference could be monumental for some students. Overall, the ten-point scale better sets students up for success. High school students are now able to access more academic scholarships for college in the state and out of state giving them more opportunities out of high school and setting them up for achievement.
