On the date of November 28th, 2022 there was an eruption of one of Hawaii's most well known volcanoes ( Mauna loa) the state currently has the plan to close the Daniel K. Inouye Highway partially to slow and hopefully stop the lavas flow from causing damage to the island of Hawaii If the lava does cut through the highway, it would have a significant impact on the island’s infrastructure and the state transportation says if necessary they would close the highway from mile marker 8.8 to 21 and monitored by law enforcement and dot personnel ( department of transportation) Currently, flows are traveling at less than 1 mph and flows were about 5 to 6 miles long and officials say the lava is about 4 and a half miles away from the highway, which remains open.
