Homecoming is the tradition of welcoming back alumni students and/or celebrating traditions. The Homecoming tradition began during the 19th century and has since become an annual event at churches, but is most well known at high school, college, and university football games. It usually occurs in late September/ early October throughout the US and Canada.
In 1911, the first homecoming-like event was centered on a parade and football game. Homecoming court, parades, tailgates, dress up days, pep rallies, and a dance are all events that occur throughout the week of homecoming. It is a time set aside to celebrate the history of the institution and those who have attended or have been members throughout the years. Here at PHS, we are currently celebrating our Homecoming week with multiple fun and exciting events.
Some of the events that we have done this past week have been competition banners, hallway decorations, chain link competitions, and dress up days. For the banners, each grade level made a banner representing the football game “Crush Catholic” and competed for which grade level made the best one. Also, for the hallway decorations, each grade level decorated a hallway within the school, and they decide who’s hallway is decorated the best. The last competition is the chain links. During lunch, students go and buy a chain link for their grade. The class with the longest chain link wins, the winner wins a free day out of the week! Lastly, the best part about homecoming week is dressing up for the themes! Monday is jersey day, Tuesday is Christmas in October, Wednesday is Country vs Country club and Thursday is class t-shirt day. Since the homecoming game this week is on Thursday, there’s no theme for Friday.
Thursday, October 21, is the Powell vs Catholic homecoming game. There will be old friends and staff of Powell High School coming to support, and you should too! This is going to be a huge and exciting game.
