While PHS’ policy on tardy passes has already been discussed in an earlier article, the parent factor was left out. Students attending PHS have already advocated changing the policy because it is excessive. No other school in the area makes the students sit at a desk facing the wall for being late for school. This does not fix the behavior, all it does is humiliate the student. Along with the punishment not working, it is unfair to students who do not drive themselves to school. These students may wake up and get ready fast enough to make it to school on time, but if they do not drive, their parents dictate what time they arrive. As a student whose mom was chronically late, I would choose my dad to take me to school. If I did not have my father as an option I would’ve been a part of the tardy crew during lunch. This is why the policy should only apply to students who drive themselves to school, or once the student gets a certain amount of tardies a parent meeting should be scheduled. This meeting should accommodate the parents as well as the students because the same parent who is making the student late might also work night shifts. With these changes, PHS might actually see the results they were seeking.
