School spirit is an essential part of high school. This is one aspect of the high school experience PHS gets right. One of Powell’s most prominent contributions to this is that all around the school we have posters that represent different characteristics and talents our students have. Not only do the posters show diversity, but students can also connect with the posters and apply them to themselves. I sat down and spoke with our principal, Dr. Chad Smith, and I was able to dig deeper into some of the meanings behind the posters. After showing Dr. Smith some photos of the posters we had a conversation about what their intended purpose was. While each picture had a different meaning, they all came back to the same main component; to make students feel welcomed and comfortable. Dr. Smith emphasized the idea that whether students realize it or not, they do relate to at least one picture they walk past each day, this makes students feel like they belong because their personalities are represented throughout the school. The question of how the posters affect students and why our school has a great sense of school spirit was answered. Students know that they are represented and loved by students and the facility. A sense of belonging can make even the worst day feel a little better; especially if you feel it every time you walk down the hallway.
