Many students may wonder why we, as a school, collect canned food during spirit week. This is due to Second Harvest Food Bank, a member of a national network called Feeding America. This network comprises more than 200 food banks that help feed people across the country. Their motto is, "Hunger has no season," and they are taking the initiative to engage the community in the battle against hunger while feeding those in East Tennessee who are in need. The programs of Second Harvest are designed to reach every type of person in every demographic in East Tennessee. No one is overlooked if they are hungry, whether it is through programs tailored to children, the elderly, or families. For every $1 donated, three meals are provided from food donated by grocery stores, corporate sponsors, community food drives, and individuals. Once all these resources are collected, they are then given to 630+ partner organizations, such as food pantries, shelters, and churches. If you are interested in helping, visit their website at athttps://secondharvestetn.org for more information on how to donate, or volunteer at your local food bank. To raise awareness of this pressing issue, you can discuss hunger in our neighborhood with others. Do you participate in any social, professional, religious, or civic organizations? Talk to them about joining the cause. Get your group engaged in a food or fund drive, or sign up for a group to assist at the food bank. Everything begins with you. Talk to your acquaintances and assist us in helping the local community. Together, we are battling hunger and providing food for hope in our society.
