Ian is the ninth system in the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season, but only the fourth to develop into a hurricane. The hurricane was built from a tropical wave, east of the Windward Islands, on September 19. On September 21, the wave moved into the Caribbean sea, bringing winds and heavy rain to small islands and to the northern coasts of Venezuela and Colombia. After intensifying as a tropical storm in the Cayman Islands, Ian slammed into the western part of Cuba on September 27, 2022, as a Category 3. Cuba faced considerable damages, such as major flooding, 2 people's death, and the power going out on the whole island. After hitting Cuba, Ian strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane with winds up to 155 mph. Hurricane Ian is expected to make landfall late morning or early afternoon on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, in Florida as a Category 4 hurricane, but it will only be 2 mph away from being a category 5. It is not clear exactly where the hurricane will make landfall, but the governor stated that it would most likely be in Charlotte County, Florida. If Ian follows the forecast zone, it could be a catastrophic experience for the Tampa Bay area due to the life-threatening storm surge of up to 18 feet that would be pushed directly into the area. Hurricane Ian is expected to move across Florida, briefly touch the Atlantic Ocean, then come back through parts of Georgia, South and North Carolina, East Tennessee, and even as far as Kentucky (as a smaller storm system). This hurricane could create major economic losses for Florida and other parts of the United States with damages that could add up to $45 billion.
