Maryville VS. Powell

Olivia Yancey

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Thursday's game between Powell and Maryville ended in a 38-13 loss for Powell's varsity football team. Maryville faced an even tougher test against Powell a week after holding a revamped Heritage offense to just 184 total yards. Despite playing without senior quarterback Jordyn Potts due to a shoulder injury, Maryville still managed to shut down Powell's offense. Powell (0-2) was held to just 70 total yards in the first half by Maryville. On their first two offensive drives, the Rebels advanced into Panther territory, but they were only able to score three points thanks to senior kicker Corbin Price's field goal from 28 yards out. On Powell's next drive, Maryville forced a three-and-out, and a misplaced punt put the Rebels on their 49-yard line. Maryville then went on an 11-play drive that ended with a touchdown pass from senior wide receiver Caleb Dunford to senior quarterback Matthew Clemmer for a score of 4 yards, giving Maryville a 10-0 lead. On Maryville's following offensive possession, Price missed a 34-yard field goal, but the defense's largest contribution came in the form of a forced fumble that senior linebacker Isaiah French recovered at the Powell 18-yard line. After two plays, Noah Vaughn, a junior running back, received a swing ball from Clemmer and raced 18 yards unimpeded for his first of three touchdowns. When Vaughn, who accumulated 215 yards from scrimmage on 25 touches after thrashing the Panthers (0-2) for 205 yards and four touchdowns last season, broke a 30-yard touchdown run with six minutes left, a safe three-score cushion became a 24-0 advantage that put Powell away. The third quarter has 51 seconds remaining. Following that, Maryville sent home some of its defensive players, which allowed Powell to score twice in the final 14 minutes. The first score came on a 3-yard run by Vaughn to complete his hat trick, and the second came on a 4-yard dash by junior running back Price Davis as the Rebels responded to each score with one of their own. Overall, Maryville gave up 275 total yards, 122 of which came on Powell's two fourth-quarter drives against the backup defense while still featuring players like Cincinnati recruit Ayden Greene.
