My Tree

Savannah Kerns

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

When I was younger, I planted a tree in my grandpa's backyard, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. We moved shortly after that to Kentucky. I wonder about that tree every day. Has it grown to be big and tall, or did it never make it above a foot? It takes years for a tree to grow to its full height, just like it takes years for a person to grow to their full potential. Did my tree grow with me? Did my tree ever get the opportunity to live a great life in that peaceful backyard? Growing is very impactful. Growing up has taught me the good and bad of the world we are currently living in. I don't get to grow up in a peaceful world, but did my tree? I have challenges and situations that make me stronger, and the older I get, the more roots I put down to stay stable. I hope my tree does the same thing; gets through storms, hot summers, and cold winters, and even with no care, it will still grow.

I know my tree is strong, just like me, and it will grow no matter what obstacles get in the way, just like I will set down my roots and get through all the obstacles in my life that lead to a great future and nothing will stop my tree's roots from growing either. Just like a tree, the older you get the taller you get, and the more opportunities pop up in your life. I've learned a lot in the last 17 years of my life; I've lost a lot of things and people, but I haven't lost my tree. I haven't given up, and as long as my tree stays strong, I will too. I will grow my roots and be my person. I will do what makes me happy and I will not let the world cut me or my tree down. I hope my tree is stable like me. I hope one day I can go and visit my tree and make sure she is big and tall, just like me.
