No Means No

By: Brianna Madison

On Monday, August 23, 2021, a 17-year-old girlś life was changed forever. Between 11:30 p.m and midnight, the young girl was raped and left beaten on the lawn of Nebraska-Lincoln University´s Phi Gamma Delta fraternity (commonly known as Figi) by one of the 19-year-old members of the house. The victim went to the frat house with an 18-year-old acquaintance and shortly after the friend left was when the tragedy occurred. The incident was reported to police shortly after 3 a.m. that next day and is currently being closely investigated. This is not the first time this fraternity has been accused of sexual harassment. Thirteen other women have claimed to have been raped by fraternity members and there are at least 103 accusations of sexual assault against the fraternity since 2005.

Later on that same day, nearly 1,000 students gathered outside of Figi house calling for the fraternity to be banned for good. The next day even more protesters joined in chanting ¨no means no'' and the perpetrator’s name. While this was happening, a video was circulating of the members of the house laughing at the protestors. The fraternity is closed down as of right now due to the investigation. Protestors have created an online petition that people from all across the world can sign in order to get the house banned for good. They already have over 415,000 signatures, and the petitionś goal is to obtain 500 thousand. Many have opened up and shared their Figi SA stories on the comments portion of the petition. No means no, and that's a topic that we as a people need to address and work on.
