North Korea Launches Missiles

Rachel Armstrong

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

On November 2, 2022, North Korea launched the highest number of short-range missiles in one day in the direction of South Korea. North Korea fired up to 23 missiles of varying types to the east and west of the Korean Peninsula. One of the missiles landed 104 miles northwest of South Korea’s Ulleung island, about 16 miles south of the Northern Limit Line. This is the first time this has occurred since the division of Korea in 1945. South Korea retaliated and fired three air-to-surface missiles toward the northern border, sending some citizens to evacuate into underground shelters. North Korea then fired 100 rounds of artillery and additional missile launches that lasted into and through the evening. Many people are skeptical about why North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, would do this. Some of the main assumptions are that he is seeking to develop his regime’s nuclear arsenal, pressure the United States to ease sanctions, and challenge South Korea’s new leader, Yoon Suk-Yeol. Christopher Green, a senior consultant on the Korean Peninsula for the International Crisis Group, said that Kim Jong-un is “salami slicing the escalation ladder,” searching for the world's attention again. It seems this is more for show than actual military action.
