Here at Powell High School, if you are tardy in the morning or to any of your classes you are punished with silent lunch for the day. Now given, if you have a doctor’s note you are excused, but looking into it, the policy isn’t all that fair. Sometimes people have legitimate reasons to be late such as traffic, sickness, having to take siblings to school, or just an honest mistake. I'm not saying they should throw the policy away completely, but I think it needs to be changed because if a straight-A perfect attendance student is two minutes late they are automatically punished. A better way to make the policy would be, for example, if you are late five times then you get a silent lunch. In my opinion, that is way fairer`. Not to mention a large percentage of students don’t have a license so they can’t control when their parents drop them off, especially if they have siblings who also need to be dropped off. In addition, lunch is the only time we can completely let go of schoolwork and hang out with friends, so to take that away for something little isn’t very appropriate. Teachers and staff are late as well, for the same reasons as students, so you would think they would be more understanding than they are. Overall, I believe if the policy changed a bit it would help improve our school greatly.
