Have you ever had a soda pet peeve? Do you hate it when every time you open a soda of some sort it explodes? Well, one thing I hate is when the bottle is at the, “There she blows!” stage, and people say, “Hurry close it!”. Well that's hard to do while it's exploding! Our hands aren't fast enough to close it before it spills everywhere. Throughout social media, you can find posts of people complaining about their drinks exploding. One person said even said, ¨Coca-Cola® took a man's eye out¨. This tragedy was different, but was still a soda explosion. A man had left the 2 liters of Coke® in his truck, causing it to freeze solid. He then brought them into his home, and moments after he walked into the room they were in, they exploded and a shard of plastic had been launched, taking his eye out.
The man not only experienced a whole lot of pain, but had permanent damage done to his eye. He was blinded for the rest of his life. He seeks damage compensation from Coca-Cola® Enterprises and Southeastern Container for negligence, product liability, and failure to warn; and damages from Schnuck Markets, where he bought the Coke®, for negligence and breach of implied warranty. Many more people have had a similar injury, but with the glass bottle, and it's becoming a bigger problem- to the point where Coca-Cola® might face lawsuits. According to the National Institute of Health, ¨A total of 426 cases of ocular injuries were seen during the period under review. There were 335 (78.6%) males and 91 (21.4%) females.¨ Six patients had an ocular injury from exploding glass-bottled Coca-Cola®, giving an incidence of 1.4%. The presenting visual acuities (VA) were light perception (2 cases), counting fingers (2 cases), and 1 VA of 6/24 and 1 VA of 6/12. There were 4 (66.7%) cases of corneoscleral laceration with uveal prolapse and 1 case of total hyphema.
