On October 24, 2022, a gunman opened fire on Central Visual and Performing Arts High School, in St. Louis, Missouri. The shooting was reported at 9:10 a.m. local time, and police arrived at the school by 9:15 a.m. By 9:23 the officers engaged the suspect, had him down at 9:25, and secured him by 9:32. The gunman, later identified as 19-year-old Orlando Harris, was shot and killed by responding officers. According to police and others, Harris graduated from this school in 2021 and has no prior criminal history, although he is suspected of dealing with some sort of mental illness. The victims included 15-year-old Alexandria Bell, who passed away at the school, and 61-year-old Jean Kirk Kuczka, who was shot and later died at the hospital from her injuries. Seven others were hospitalized due to various injuries, including gunshot wounds and broken bones, but they are all in stable condition. St. Louis Police Commissioner Michael Sack stated that the individual had almost a dozen 30-round, high-capacity magazines on him and this attack could've been much worse if it had not been handled correctly. Police are actively investigating and looking for the motive of this devastating event. According to Congresswoman Cori Bush, this is the country's 40th school shooting in 2022. Over the years school shootings, and shootings in general, have grown in number. There is a constant argument about how to reduce the number of shootings but, regardless of how, there needs to be some sort of resolution.
