Students Strutting The ‘Run’ Way

By Pari Patel

From leggings and an oversized shirt to color-blocked outfits to even monotonous outfits, our school has it all. I love seeing all the diverse outfits, hairstyles, and accessories people wear to school. The halls become an art gallery, coming to life with all the different outfits. The question is, why? Why are students dressing differently? Are these styles trending or is it what they like? Or is it even both?

Feminine clothing has qualities traditionally associated with women. A common misconception is that only women can wear feminine clothing. I believe that clothing has no gender and you can wear anything. I have seen some very unique and lovely feminine outfits, I wish I could pull them off. For example, I saw a girl who had a grunge/goth aesthetic. Another would be one of my friends who wears very mismatched patterns daily. This sounds odd, but the outfits are always original and fun in their own way. I also saw someone else wearing the cutest, brightest colored earrings. I enjoy seeing them in the halls because they express themselves with small accessories. All of these different feminine styles are extremely unique.

Masculine means having qualities traditionally associated with men. I have seen really nice masculine outfits around school. My favorite outfit style I have seen mixes street style and casual. For example, some nice cargo jeans and a sweatshirt, which I think is really simple and stylish. I would wear this type of outfit. A common outfit I see is the basketball style. Meaning basketball shorts and an athletic shirt. A common accessory I see with masculine outfits is stylish shoes. With these street-style outfits, I often see nice Nike shoes. I enjoy seeing all these different outfits, especially unique shoes because I see how people pull together an outfit perfectly with cool shoes instead of jewelry.

Why do students dress like this? After observing students in the halls, I see that dressing how they like actually brings comfort to them. Even if these outfits are creative, people find comfort in these outfits. For me, I’m most comfortable in baggy clothing and meaningful jewelry. I, and others, express themselves through their original style, and I think that brings them comfort. I feel that if students are comfortable, let them be.
