What a school spirited week we have had while celebrating Homecoming here at Powell High School this week. Being that homecomings are about bringing the past and present together, we thought it might be interesting to share some past history of our school with our readers. We hope you enjoy…

Powell High School was established in Powell, Tennessee in 1874. It is located at 3329 W Emory Rd. Originally, it was called Perkins High School. Later on, it was renamed Columbus Powell. Eventually, it was officially given the name Powell High School, and it is still called that to this day. Even before it was called Perkins High School, it was just a small house with two rooms, which they just called Perkins School. One room was for grades 1-4 and the other for 5-10. Powell High School was always a concept, but it has since grown into the amazing school it is today thanks to the founder, Professor William Perkins.

Before 1948, Powell High, Middle, and Elementary Schools were all one school on the grounds of where the current Powell Elementary School is now until the three levels of school grades were separated. From the 1960’s - 1970’s there was a major urban sprawl due to people seeking homes outside of the city. So in 1969, Powell Elementary School went into major expansion for grades 1-6 while the old complex was for grades 7 and 8. This construction was happening until 1979. This is when the construction was finally done. Since that time, Powell High School has been a separate high school. More recently, in 2019, Powell High School started a big renovation by making a new office complex and a common area that makes the hallway bigger and makes more sitting area for lunch. Even though Powell High School is big and bright, it continues to grow and make the learning experience for its students better and better with each passing day.
