The Mad Honey Bear

Rachel Armstrong

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

On August 11, 2022, a brown bear in Turkey, later named Balkiz by the government, which means 'honey girl' or 'honey daughter', ate a nice helping of Turkish Mad Honey. Turkish people call this type of honey “deli bal” and in 17th century Europe, it was called “Miel Fou '' or “Crazy Honey” because of its mild and euphoric effects on someone who has consumed it. Mad Honey is created when bees pollinate rhododendron flowers which are found in the remote towns of the Black Sea region. Deli Bal has been used for many different reasons. For example, the Persian government weaponized it and used it against Roman soldiers. It has also been used as medicine for certain diseases. When ingested, the mad honey can create euphoria, hallucination, dizziness, lightheadedness, and intoxication. Balkiz was certainly suffering from these side effects when found in Duzce, Turkey. It is unknown how she got ahold of so much of this somewhat rare substance. This specific type of honey is so rare that just 1 pound of it will cost between $100-$200 in Turkey, and 2 pounds going for close to $360 in the shops. Although Balkiz consumed a lot of this honey, the effects typically only last for less than 24 hours and after a short vet visit, Balkiz was released back into the wild.
