  1. Auto Insurance—The average American family still overspends on car insurance, spending $417 a year. If you need to compare prices, go to Coverage.com. Just answer the questions, and then it will provide you with a bunch of insurance quotes.

  2. Online Shopping—It's surprising how much you may be spending on online services. Big stores like Amazon know that nobody has time to price themselves and see how much they spend, so there's no reason for them to offer cheaper prices. If you don’t have a coupon extension, Capital One Shopping is a great one to use. It will automatically apply a coupon code to what you’re purchasing.

  3. Paying off credit card debt on your own (without using companies that help) — If you have 10 thousand dollars and up, using a debit relief program can reduce it by around 23%. Go to National Debt Reliefs, answer the questions, and see your qualifications.

  4. Not having a financial advisor— Most people don’t have one, and it's a mistake not to. Yes, you can manage things yourself but most people don’t have the time to do it correctly, it's always beneficial to have someone pay attention to your money all the time.

  5. Not tapping into your home equity— If you own a home but have low income or are low on cash you might want to look into a home equity line of credit (HELOC). It is basically a credit card but you borrow it against your home equity. They usually have lower interest rates and flexible terms that a typical loan would.
