What Is Nationalism?

By Pari Patel

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Nationality is your place of birth. This is very different from the topic at hand, which is Nationalism. Nationalism is identifying with the nation or country you live in and support, but in a negative way. You might think nationalism is the same ideology as patriotism is, but they are extremely different.

Patriotism is the practice of identifying with the nation or country you live in and support with a normal amount of spirit and pride. Nationalism is when you are patriotic, but so aggressively that you lose sight of the whole meaning. People like this believe their country is entitled to the best things in the world. A commonly used example would be people who blame undocumented immigrants for increasing unemployment rates and taking all the jobs. This hurts their own country because fewer people would want to immigrate to that country. When people like this get government power, it can really worsen rather than help the country. One example would be refusing to ally with others because no country can be better than theirs, resulting in it becoming an isolated country. This would only hurt the country’s reputation and economy. Basically what you need to understand is to be proud of your country, but don’t overdo it to the point where it becomes negative upon your country. You should cherish and protect your country, but don’t do it to the point of isolation.
