Why Are Politics In Church?

By Sarah Hall

If the goal to turn people away from going to church, then most are succeeding. Why are we bringing up who we should or are going to vote in church? People want to go to church to hear about God and the Bible, not the election or the church's political standpoint.

Politics is one of those topics that divides people, while the church is supposed to bring them together, so why are we mixing the two? I know I get turned away from church because I don't want to hear the pastor make fun of one of the presidential candidates or preach about another. I want to learn about God and be a better person.

It is also hard to understand how someone who is supposed to be a leader teaches young minds the word of God but is teaching them hatefulness. I have been to churches where they don't accept everyone, which goes against God’s teachings. “Accept and welcome one another without judgment” (Romans 15:7, Romans 14:1). How are you going to stand up on a stage and spread “the word of God” and then go against them? It breaks trust within the church.

A couple of years ago, my brother lost his father, and he emerged himself into religion. He wanted to feel closer to his father and have faith. I love that he is doing that, but it worries me that he goes to churches that teach his young, impressionable mind to judge others for who they are or what they like. It makes me scared that I see him absorbing the words of a figure that is supposed to guide him in the right direction but instead is him away. It is also not just my brother many other children who need guidance.

Church should be a place of love and acceptance of everyone, and yet we judge others on who they are and their choices. Why do we have to research which churches are red or blue? I hate the separation that is within church and negativity that surrounds it for some people. Politics does not belong in God’s house.
