Right now, it is almost impossible to get substitutes for school. Every time a teacher is out for a sick day or an off day, they have to worry about there being a sub to cover their classes. To become a substitute, like many other jobs, you have to have a high school diploma at the bare minimum. In addition, you also have to have your fingerprints put in a system and go through a background check. Many people have stated that being a substitute is a difficult job. One of the challenges of substituting is said to be respect and manners. Many substitutes claim that it is difficult to walk into a room and get admiration and kindness from a classroom of students that do not yet know you. As a student myself, I can see how this could be a problem. A lot of students believe that respect should be earned before it is given, however, manners are something you should use and constantly have. While students' behavior may be a part of this issue there are other factors such as cost. To become a substitute in Tennessee, you must have at least a high school diploma. If you do not have a teaching license, you will be required to take an online substitute training course for $39.95. Not only do you have to pay, but you must also pass it with an 85 percent. You also have to submit a drug screening which will cost about $58 and have your fingerprints taken, which is $39.15. All of these things I have listed are requirements. The total of all this is around $140 which is a lot of money to apply for a job. Yes, students ' behavior is a big part of the problem but what also needs to be taken into account is how much money it takes to become a substitute.
